Falkulla Farm

Museums are fine to look at and learn from and all that... but knowledge from real world experiences is.. oh something else!

A visit to Falkulla I thought was going to be just another entertaining trip where
we 'll get to see a few animals and probably have a bite to eat sitting under the sun. How naive of me to have expected just that! It was a lot more than simple fun. The hands on learning thrilled the little ones and the impact it had on them was amazing.

The sheep, goats, pigs, cows, horses, hens, ducks, rabbits became their teachers. The animals guided them as Vaibhav and Shriya fed the pinkest pigs with the curliest tails, petted the big ,burly, bellowing cows, watched the goats being milked and the horses being put to bed in their stables.

Falkulla is extra special also because of the people managing it. Young volunteers, 17 and 18 year old schoolkids are in complete control. They engage in practical work caring for the animals and take full responsibility for the gentle beasts. And what a brilliant job they do! How did that slip of a girl manage to steer that huge cow? Can a goat be so deftly milked that it does not even realize it? How do they get a herd of rams with fearful looking horns follow them without straying?

Farm activities are labour intensive. Its no joke, pushing bales of hay or carrying heavy pails of animal feed. And of course who better to do it all than young people with their boundless energy and intense curiosity? There are activities for young people aged all the way from 9 till 18. Every day of the week offers a different job and everybody is welcome. You can volunteer to clean the stables one day and probably learn about dealing with a sick animal another day.

How educative, how exciting!

The National History Museum we visited a few weeks back had spectacular displays. But I think the kids' votes for a revisit would be to this living museum, fun, fun, fun Falkulla Farm!

Weekend Wanderings

I love being a tourist at home.I did it till my last day in Singapore which is quite something as there are only so many things you can see/do there. And yet,I'd tirelessly check out new places to visit, find out directions to that hole in the wall food joint that had to be tried, read about a forgotten park or sometimes if all things fail me then plan a picnic with close friends at our all time favourite place-The Botanic Gardens.

And that's exactly what we've been doing these past few weeks in Finland.Exploring the sights and sounds of Helsinki and getting a real bite of this gorgeous city.

We took in an ice hockey game during the World Ice Hockey Championship!A first time for all of us, we were completely swept away by the speed of the game, the intensity of the fans and the fair-like atmosphere around us.Not surprisingly, the kids were particularly thrilled with the cheerleaders who kept breaking into a vigorous dance every 2 minutes. Do we look at the game or at them?

Another rainy Saturday afternoon we headed down to Linnanmaki, the most popular amusement park around Helsinki. It was well, like any other amusement park except for a couple of extremely creative activities(cant call that particular one a ride!) like Vekkula. Complete with a series of mind boggling trails and ending with a crazy slide that you come down in a carpet through a chute, it was quite an experience!
We all had our fill of thrills and it sure was fun racing from one ride to another!

The National History Museum beckoned us. Just a hop and skip from where we live, we spent an educative 2 hours learning more about our world.

There's a ton of stuff to do over the weekends here! And that includes lazing in the parks over breakfast or walking through the Market Square where juicy just-picked berries are sold at a song!Saturdays and Sundays usually flew past us in Singapore. Juggling birthday parties, picnics, dinners and dance and tennis classes- it was a whirlwind of activities. No complaints as we completely relished it then. But this is nice too. 2 days stretch ahead of us and we can do anything we please with them! Just the way weekends are supposed to be!

Vaibhav and Shriya were very excited to see Amma's photo in the paper and have very sweetly requested me to ask the editor to add in their photos next to mine!
